It’s back to school time, and that means it’s a great time to talk about Fall activities for Spanish class! Do you like to do season-specific activities?
At the beginning of my career I loved all the extra special things. Then I got in a stage where I felt that I didn’t have the time or the energy. But now I like to sprinkle in some themed activities because it exposes my students to a wider variety of vocabulary. They retain what’s meaningful to them or repeated enough, and that’s a win!
Easy Fall Activities For Spanish Class
I am definitely in the stage of life where I’m trying to work smarter, not harder. So easy things are important. One of the easiest ways I can work in Fall into our Spanish classes is with my daily warm-up.
I created these Fall-themed turn and talk scenario cards. I display one each day, and ask my students to turn to their neighbor and take turns answering the prompt. I also provide them with a vocabulary sheet with a list of common fall-themed words. This allows everyone to participate, talk about what they find relevant, and raise confidence. I re-use them every year! And they are easy to use for students in Spanish 2 up to AP!
Holidays
Another way to incorporate Fall activities for Spanish class is by taking advantage of the Fall holidays. There’s Hispanic Heritage Month, Day of the Dead and Halloween too! Thanksgiving comes at the tail end of Fall as well.
I have 2 go-to activities that I use to make room for exploring holidays in class. This way, we can learn about these holidays but not take several days or a week out of our normal curriculum to do so.
One is by doing writing group challenges. I have a whole post about exactly how I do those here. But very briefly, students work in groups of 4 on a writing task that has a theme. I award prizes to groups for different reasons, like most creative and best teamwork. My students love the freedom they have to take these in their own direction, and everyone reports that working together helped them with something they didn’t previously know!
Another of my favorite fall activities for Spanish class is a reading scavenger hunt. Again, if you want to read in detail, here is a post about how they work. Essentially, students read cards that I have hung around the room, and use the info on the cards to answer questions that they grid in on their answer sheet. The final question/answer comes from certain letters in the answers they find along the way.
What I love about these scavenger hunts is that students are not only improving their reading skills, but they’re learning about culture and learning to work with others. But, they are out of their seats, solving a mystery and competing to finish before the bell. They have so much fun that they don’t even realize how engaged they are in their learning!

Work Smarter, Not Harder
There are lots of benefits of using the season to vary what your students are doing for Fall activities for Spanish class. But don’t forget… you don’t have to work harder!
Talk to colleagues and ask if they want to collaborate or share activities! Consider shopping a sale on TPT to grab something that’s already done for you! Create things that you can use with more than one class and year after year!
