3 Kings Day falls right as we are getting back to school from our winter break. What perfect timing to talk about an important holiday in the Spanish-speaking world! And how wonderful to have the first day back planned and ready with something fun and interesting for your students!
What Is 3 Kings Day?
In a nut shell, 3 Kings Day is a religious holiday tied to Christmas. The 3 wise men arrive late to meet the Baby Jesus, and bring him gifts. American students find some really interesting cultural comparisons, and that’s why I love to teach about this holiday!
First, 3 Kings Day is the time when Spanish-speaking children look forward to receiving gifts. In the US, December 25th is the big day when Santa Clause arrives. But in Spanish-speaking countries, the 3 Kings bring children more gifts than Santa. And it’s so fun because the night before, children leave their shoes out and fill them with hay to feed the camels that the 3 Kings arrive on!
How To Teach About 3 Kings Day
So what activities would be fun for students when learning about 3 Kings Day?? I can make a list for you- there are so many ways you could engage your learners!
- A Google Slides Presentation
- A reading
- A class member or their parent/relative can come and talk to the class about 3 Kings Day
- Students can do cultural comparisons
- Students can write or chat about what they would prefer using a bunch of traditions involving Christmas in both cultures
